Twenty years later, Backstreet Boys still ‘got it goin’ on’

Nearly 20 years after declaring they’ve “got it goin’ on,” the Backstreet Boys are still in demand.

The boy band that graduated from teenage dreams to full-fledged adults without spiraling into obscurity (or worse) is packing arenas across the globe with its current “In a World Like This Tour,” which began last year.

The tour marks the 20th anniversary of the group that, along with baby-faced rivals ’N Sync and 98 Degrees, dominated the charts worldwide during the boy band boom of the late 1990s — and with 130 million albums sold, it’s unlikely the Backstreet Boys will ever relinquish the title of best-selling boy band in history.

Both BSB and their fans have matured beyond the glory days of syrupy pop. The group’s latest album, 2013’s “In a World Like This,” continues a blend of contemporary pop rock and R&B inflected harmonies and the stage show proves the guys — in their 30s and 40s — still have it goin’ on.

Ahead of their stop at the Forum on Thursday, Pop & Hiss caught up with member Brian Littrell to talk touring, reunions and how the group has kept it together.

This tour is massive. It must feel great to still be in such demand.

We’ve been all over the globe. We’re about to do our second European run in July. We’re doing our second [North American] run now. The fan response has been amazing. We started it as our 20th anniversary tour, and we’ve already been together 21 years now. The anniversary has come and gone but we’re still kicking.

The Backstreet Boys haven’t had a huge hit in years … but they’re still earning 1990s-sized paychecks.

BSB just collected $750K to star in a Swedish commercial … singing a version of “Larger Than Life” … for a Swedish warehouse store.
Brian Littrell tells us … the guys divided the spoils evenly — $150K a piece. Brian pocketed an additional $80K for co-writing the tune.

Littrell says the commercial shows them slaving away in a warehouse when they suddenly break into song.

Now here’s the hook … they changed the lyrics from “larger than life” to “lager than life.” Lager means warehouse in Swedish.

Swedish humor … it’s not that funny.

Last week Jenn and I (Frankie) Recieved this email:

A woman named Laura emailed the station on behalf of a woman she works with named Katherine.

Katherine is a 33 year old woman with Down Syndrome who absolutely loves the Backstreet Boys.

She is unfortunately on limited income and cannot afford tickets, so Laura (who is Katherine’s support worker) has been trying to win some for her- with absolutely no luck.

So, Laura emailed us explaining the situation, with the hopes that we would be able to give Katherine a pair of tickets to the show.

Now we can’t do this all the time but when the stars align things happen!!! We not only managed to get Katherine tickets for the show – we also arranged a Meet & Greet with the Backstreet Boys!

Listen to the call and her response here:

Here’s the follow up after the show!!

Kath and I had a fabulous time last night THANK YOU so so much Energy 106.
They were totally amazing. It couldn’t of gotten any better.
At the meet and greet I asked Brian if he could sing or something to Kath as she just loves him and he is her favorite he said he would look for her.
We went and got out tickets and were shocked as where we were sitting 6th row right by the stage.
We could reach out and touch their hands. Brian pointed at Kath and blew kisses to her throughout the night. He gave her a heart shaped pick and a jets jersey with his last name on it that he wore.
She is so so happy. It was a night we will never forget.
AJ and Kevin also acknowledged her a lot as well. They are amazing men.
It was a dream come true Thanks again for helping me make it come true for her.

Laura

SIMPLY AWESOME!!!
