Let’s face it: The Backstreet Boys never really left, and to prove it they just dropped a new single titled “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which will be followed by a jam-packed year. Not only will the Boys return to their Vegas residency for more dates, but considering that 2018 marks their 25th year together, they’ll also be dropping a new album … or two.

EW talked to band members Brian Littrell and AJ McLean about what to expect from BSB in 2018 and beyond.

The new single

“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” was released Thursday.

LITTRELL: We’ve recorded maybe 10 or 12 songs and this one just hit. It kind of screams Backstreet Boys.

MCLEAN: To me it sounds like if you were to mash-up The Weeknd with the Bee Gees. It’s reminiscent of old-school Backstreet Boys, like Millenium days, with a more modern twist to it. It’s a feel-good record.

The new album

The band’s upcoming 10th studio album is expected in the fall.

MCLEAN: The album is slowly starting to take shape. There’s been songs that are pop-country, songs that are straight urban R&B, songs like “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which is almost borderline EDM. We’re fans of all walks of music and that’s what you’re going to hear on this album.

LITTRELL: That was a great answer, AJ. I’m not even going to attempt that one.

Don’t go breaking Howie Dorough’s heart!

Nearly five years since their last album, In a World Like This, the Backstreet Boys have dropped their catchy new single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and to mark the long-awaited release, Dorough gets personal with ET about his earliest experience with heartbreak.

“I unfortunately remember it really well,” Dorough says during dance rehearsals for the band’s upcoming appearances. “I was 21 and dating my singing partner right as the group was starting to take off and it was tough on her knowing I was going to be gone a lot and there would be a bunch of ladies around. Out of fairness to her, we separated and it broke my heart.”

“It was the first time I felt what it was like to have that weird feeling in your stomach and those thoughts in your head that make you crazy … when you just can’t let go of that thought of somebody. It makes you want to cry and pour your heart out!” he adds.

While Dorough, 44, got through his sorrow and eventually found love with his gorgeous wife of 10 years, Leigh, the theme remains the center of countless pop songs, including many in the boy band’s 25-year catalog, which features hits like “Shape of My Heart,” “I’ll Never Break Your Heart,” “Back to Your Heart” and “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).”

In the case of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” the track was written by Los Angeles singer-songwriter Wrabel, who has toured with Gavin DeGraw and Andy Grammer, and Dorough says the song simply had the “hit factor” when it came to deciding on a single.

Backstreet’s back alright!

The Backstreet Boys released their new single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” at midnight Thursday, marking their first song debut since “Show ‘Em (What You’re Made Of)” off their 2013 album, In a World Like This.

“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” — written by Stephen Wrabel and produced by Stuart Crichton and Jamie Hartman — was recorded immediately after the first leg of the band’s successful 26-show Las Vegas residency, Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life, which will kick off again with an additional 21 shows in July until November.

Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson, A.J. McLean and Howie Dorough had been teasing the song’s release throughout the week and celebrating with a three-day social media countdown until the premiere.

And fans of the boyband turned manband will not be disappointed as the group also dropped the single’s video in which the quintet shows off some impressive interpretive and synchronized dance moves that harked back to their heyday.

The boys dance with a light show as their backdrop while McLean does his best to serenade what appears to be a hologram of a very attractive woman.

The new single release comes nearly a month after the Backstreet Boys celebrated their 25th anniversary. And they’re still going strong.

Their music was given a country-fied remix following a series of collaborations with Florida Georgia Line including the No. 1 hit “God, Your Mama and Me.”

“I want to create new memories. We’ve been singing the same songs for almost 25 years,” Littrell recently told PEOPLE. “It’s not that we’re not excited to sing our old hits, but we want to grow, too. We don’t want to be stuck in what was. We want to continue to grow with our fans.”

… so you can sing along with the boys 😉

[Verse 1: Nick Carter]
I got mixed emotions
Did I finally find me a river that could lead me out to the ocean?
Cause I’ve only ever known the kind of love that leaves you bodied and broken
So forgive me for my mixed emotions, yeah yeah

[Pre-Chorus: All]
I’m not that kind of person who can fall in and out of love with you
That’s not what love’s supposed to do
I’m not that kind of person who can fall in and out of love with you
That’s not what love’s supposed to do

[Chorus: All]
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Cause it’s the only one I got
Cause it’s the only one I got

[Verse 2: AJ McLean]
Am I being too open?
Cause I told you everything I have to say and now we’re having a moment
Does it make you wanna pick up all your things and drive away like it’s stolen?
Just forgive me if I’m being too open, no no no no, yeah yeah yeah

[Pre-Chorus: All]
I’m not that kind of person who can fall in and out of love with you
That’s not what love’s supposed to do (what love’s supposed to do)
I’m not that kind of person who can fall in and out of love with you
That’s not what love’s supposed to do

[Chorus: All]
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Cause it’s the only one I got
Cause it’s the only one I got
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Cause it’s the only one I got
Cause it’s the only one I got

[Bridge: Nick Carter]
I’ve been broken, I’ve been bruised
But now I’m all in ’cause of you
So if you’re gonna love me, love me right, yeah
But if you’re gonna be someone that hurts somebody just for fun
Then do it to a heart that isn’t mine

[Chorus: All]
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Cause it’s the only one I got
Cause it’s the only one I got
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Baby, don’t go breaking my heart, breaking my heart
Cause it’s the only one I got
It’s the only one, it’s the only one I got
Cause it’s the only one I got
Baby don’t go…
