Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell: “There Were Plenty of Times That I Was Fearful for My Life”

One-fifth of the BSB on the group’s new documentary Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of and the perils of being in the biggest boy band in the world.

By Eliza Thompson

At the start of the new documentary Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You Made Of (in theaters and available on VOD today), Nick Carter says, “In the beginning, it was manufactured. There’s no doubt about it. But it’s like Pinocchio. He was manufactured, but he turned into a real boy.” This is a surprisingly great analogy for the group, who’ve spent the last few years reestablishing themselves as a band that has full control over their lives and careers. Brian Littrell — who, full disclosure, was always my favorite Backstreet Boy — chatted with Cosmopolitan.com about the movie, Lou Pearlman, and his early years in the BSB. He was every bit as charming as you imagined him back when Millennium was the only album you owned, beginning the interview by singing my name (yes, it’s my ringtone now), then quizzing me about my thoughts on the movie. Backstreet’s back, alright?

I watched the movie last night. It was really fun!
Was it just fun, Eliza? Was it just fun, or was it deep and amazing and heartfelt?

Oh, it was everything. I felt a lot of feelings.
[Laughs] Good. That’s a good thing. What’s your overall view of the film? Is it what you expected?

It was very emotional. There were parts where I was tearing up a little bit. I didn’t expect that. I thought it would be more of a concert film.
Well, that’s good. We’re getting reviews that as a Backstreet Boys fan it’s kind of uncomfortable to watch, because you don’t anticipate what you’re really gonna see. We didn’t want it to be a cushy, promotional concert film like the pop stars of today make. I mean, it is a making of a record, but it’s also a making of a career, the highs and lows, and hopefully you get that in watching it.

How much do you see the other Boys when you’re not on tour or working on an album?
